Once upon a time, working from home was either the preserve of the super well-off, or those practicing the world’s “oldest profession”.
For the rest of us, work at home jobs were usually nothing more than a scam to get your money or pyramid selling scheme nightmares.
But since the advent of the internet, something has changed. Now there is the so called “gig economy” where people do odd jobs, often one offs, for cash.
It is predicted that by 2020, 40% of the workforce in the United States will be in the ‘gig’, or temporary economy to some extent.
If you like the idea of working at home, but are unsure where to start, here is a list of the top five freelance jobs that can actually pay the bills.
- DATA ENTRY CLERK
This is a good entry level position for anyone who is reasonably computer literate and has a computer and working internet connection. Extra points if you have ever worked as a clerk or in a data entry job before.
Because firms are looking to cut overheads like office costs, there is more demand than ever for people who can work at home.
The pay may be best termed as average, but if you’re fast enough, it’s livable.
- VIRTUAL ASSISTANT
Similarly, other admin tasks that may have been done by a secretary or PA are more likely to find their way online as companies look to save money.
Being a virtual assistant could mean anything from making phone calls on a client’s behalf, to replying to emails.
- WEB DEVELOPER
This is probably the most lucrative work at home job which is currently enjoying a spike in popularity.
If you are even vaguely tech minded this could be a career for you. Most people do not have the time or the inclination to build their own websites from scratch and there is a huge demand for those who do have those skills.
Even if you don’t have all the training, it is not as hard as it looks to learn the basics and it may be worth investing in some courses to hone your talent.
Better still, you do not usually need to have a degree, just relevant experience to prove that you can do the job.
Web Developers can earn good money, so your training could be an investment!
Very popular right now, but not as easy it looks!
Initially, your blog may be more like a slog, but it is worth persevering as building up your audience can pay dividends. You do have to be in it for the long haul, though.
Lastly, but by no means least, is the position of freelance writer. Since the advent of the internet, there are now millions of websites out there which all require fresh content writing for them. The job of freelance writer has never been more in demand than it is currently.
Naturally, you will need good English and canny turn of phrase. This is one profession where you can literally write your own success!
